The second event in The
Literacy Council’s 2009 Signature Series
is set for tomorrow (Tuesday, July 28) at 6:30 p.m., and it will feature Warren
St. John. This reporter for the New
York Times will share his latest
novel, Outcasts United. This is a
powerful and inspiring tale of a refugee soccer team, a remarkable woman
coach and a small southern town turned upside down by the process of refugee
resettlement. Warren St. John has written for the New York
Observer, The New Yorker, Wired and Slate, in addition to his work as a reporter for The
New York Times. His first book, Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer: A Journey into the
Heart of Fan Mania (2004), was named one of Sports Illustrated's best books of the year, and
ranked number one on The Chronicle of Higher Education's list of the best books
ever written about collegiate athletics.
This Signature Series event will be catered by The Fish Market on Southside
and will feature foods from the native countries of the refugees (children) in
St. John’s book.
The Signature Series, sponsored by Alabama Power Company and in partnership with The Alabama Booksmith, brings three prominent authors to Birmingham for private cocktail receptions within a year.
Patrons spend the evening with one of America’s
most fascinating authors and receive a signed first edition of the author’s
latest work in one of Birmingham’s most beautiful homes. Signature
Series subscriptions are limited to
preserve the intimacy of each reception. The name of the featured author and
the date of the event are confirmed approximately two months before each
party.
Past authors include:
Frank Stitt, Richard North Patterson, Rick Bragg, Delta Burke, Shelley Stewart,
Dixie Carter, Mark Childress, Charlton Heston, Howell Raines and Tracy
Chevalier.
Proceeds benefit The Literacy Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting organizations that provide literacy services in Central Alabama. To purchase tickets contact The Literacy Council at 205-326-1925 or 1-888-448-7323 or www.literacy-council.org.
