I wrote last time about The Glass Room by Simon Mawer. Again, I highly recommend it. I've even said as much now to a national audience.
Diane Rehm was talking about it recently on her Public Radio program, and I just was compelled to phone in. After a quick shoutout to Birmingham magazine where my book column runs each month, I told her how much my own bookgroup had enjoyed it, how we all thought the house itself was a character in the book and some of what we discussed.
I must
say, I was a bit taken aback when Diane asked me what our group thought of all
the sexual content in the book. There’s a lot of it, but, really, we weren’t
all that concerned with that. We are all big girls after all. Her question did catch me off guard though; I was
momentarily panicked, in fact, and I'm sure it was obvious in my voice.
If you read this book, be sure to Google "Villa Tugendhat" (a masterpiece of German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) so you can see the house as it is faithfully depicted in the book. The photos are a great tool to have on hand while reading this incredible book. And be sure to check out Diane's show at www.wamu.org/programs/dr
