WRITE CLUB. It rhymes with Fight Club. And it’s “literary bloodsport” of a sort.
WRITE CLUB is a high-velocity competitive readings series that donates all its proceeds to charities of the winning writers’ choosing. It’s part of the AJC Decatur Book Festival happening September 2-4 at Decatur High School in Decatur, Ga.
WRITE CLUB is set for Saturday from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Presenters include authors Susan White, Man Martin, Jessica Handler, Patti Callahan Henry, Andisheh Nouraee and Daniel Black.
Expect three (sometimes four) “bouts” of good-natured, literary fun involving two opposing writers/two opposing ideas. Writers receive a one-word (or short phrase) assignment from host Ian Belknap, (“Fire” vs. “Ice”, say, or “Fate” vs. “Free Will”) Writers then create an original piece on that topic, read it live at the show and the audience picks the winner of that bout by applause. The net proceeds from each show are split evenly among the three (or four) victors’ charities. (So be sure to bring a donation to give at the door!)
